Announcement Regarding Efforts Toward the Establishment of Design and Manufacturing Bases for Next-Generation Semiconductors

November 11, 2022

METI has an announcement regarding efforts in the latter half of the 2020s toward the establishment of design and manufacturing bases for next-generation semiconductors. METI has released an overview of the new research and development organization for next-generation semiconductors, which will be named the Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center. In addition, Rapidus Corporation has been selected for the research and development project toward the establishment of future semiconductor manufacturing bases.
Next-generation semiconductors are a core technology that will bring about major innovations such as quantum technology and AI. Academia and industries in Japan will work as a whole while cooperating with research institutions and industries overseas with the goal of strengthening the competitiveness of Japanese semiconductor-related industries.

1. The new research and development organization for research into next-generation semiconductors

The Basic Principles on Semiconductor Cooperation were agreed upon at the first ministerial meeting of the Japan-US Commercial and Industrial Partnership (JUCIP) in May. With a view toward joint research between Japan and the US based on that agreement, METI decided in July to launch a new research and development organization to bring together wisdom from Japan and abroad for research into next-generation semiconductors. METI has now released an overview of the organization, which has been named the Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center (LSTC). METI aims to launch the organization by the end of this year.

2. Organizer of the research and development project toward the establishment of future semiconductor manufacturing bases

As part of the Research and Development Project of the Enhanced Infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems, METI opened a call for applicants to conduct the second research and development initiative, "Developing Technologies for Manufacturing Leading-Edge Semiconductors," and the selection committee selected Rapidus Corporation after reviewing the applicants.
