Survey Results of Factory Location Trends in 2021 (January-December) Compiled
May 27, 2022
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled a report presenting the results of its Survey of Factory Location Trends, which targeted businesses in the manufacturing, gas supply, heating supply, and electricity supply sectors that acquired 1,000 m2 or more of land in 2021 (January-December) for the purpose of constructing factories.
Outline of the results
◆The manufacturing and other sectors acquired 858 new factory locations (up 3% year-on-year), which cover a total of 1,283 ha (up 11% year-on-year).
Note: 1 ha = 10,000 m2

◆Looking at the trends regarding new factory locations by sector, the total number increased in sectors such as food, metal product, and transportation machinery manufacturing. However, it decreased in others such as production machinery manufacturing and the chemical industry. The total area increased in sectors such as food, metal product, and general-purpose and transportation machinery manufacturing.
◆The top reason respondents gave for where they chose to locate their new factories was closeness to their own head office and/or other factories. The land price ranked second. The results show that locations within the same prefecture as the head office continued to account for 60 to 70% of the total.
