METI Minister Nishimura Holds Meeting with H.E. Ms. Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade and Industry, Kenya, and Signs Joint Statement

Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade and Industry, Kenya, who visited Japan to attend the G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting held in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29, 2023, in which Kenya was a country invited to an outreach session. The two sides signed a joint statement on industrial cooperation.
1. Outline of the meeting
At the meeting, Minister Nishimura stated that Kenya is a country with one of the largest local bases for Japanese companies developing business in Africa and is attracting attention as a business gateway to the continent, backed by its geographical advantage of facing the Indian Ocean. He added that against this backdrop the scale of business that Japanese companies in Kenya are actually engaged in is dramatically growing. He also mentioned that the Japan-Kenya Business Roundtable, in which Cabinet Secretary Miano delivered a keynote speech, was a great success, and indicated his expectations for increased interest in Kenya by Japanese companies. Cabinet Secretary Miano stated that her visit to Japan deepened her understanding of Japanese companies and that Kenya would like to mutually cooperate with Japan in terms of both industry and trade.
The two sides agreed to launch a Kenya-Japan Industrial Policy Dialogue as a future framework for Japan-Kenya dialogues in order to further enrich discussions on industrial areas and signed a joint statement on industrial cooperation between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry of Kenya.



2. Outline of the joint statement
Japan and Kenya agreed to address the following actions through the Kenya-Japan Industrial Policy Dialogue.
- To indicate the direction of industrial collaboration that will contribute to strengthening economic relations between Kenya and Japan.
- To examine cooperation areas that may become points of discussion in the future and support mutually beneficial relations between Kenya and Japan.
- Joint cooperation to improve market access through strengthening supply capacity and expanding exports
