3. Domestic and Overseas Employment
The total number of regular employees in Parent companies in Japan decreased in all industries by 1.4% from the same quarter a year ago, to 2.502 million employees.
The total number of employees of Overseas subsidiaries increased by 3.6% to 1.36 million employees. It increased in all areas except NIES3, with North America, China and other Asian countries greatly to the overall growth.
The percentage of Parent companies anticipating increased employment in the 1998 April-June quarter rose, with the DI rising by 9.5 points (-23.3 to -13.8) from the preceding quarter. The growth was anticipated in nine industries, due probably to the increase in hiring of new graduates from schools, etc.
Among Overseas subsidiaries worldwide, the percentage of those anticipating increased employment fell by 1.7 points (7.6 to 5.9). It fell in areas other than NIES3 and Europe.
