2.Domestic and Overseas Employment

The number of regular employees at the Japanese parent companies totaled 2.529 million, and, with the number of employees falling in all industrial categories, a decline of 1.6% on the same quarter of the previous year was recorded.

The number of employees at the overseas subsidiaries climbed in all regions except the NIES 3 and Europe to record 1.368 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.4%. However, the rate of increase is trending downwards.

Considering now the predictions for the July-December of 1998 by relative DI, domestic parent companies were at -18.4 points (-14.1 to -32.5), indicating a large rise in the share of companies predicting a fall in earnings. Looking at the figures by industry, of the 13 categories all but iron & steel were down. The figure for overseas subsidiaries in all regions was -2.8 points (5.7 to 2.9), indicating a fall in the share of companies predicting a rise in employment. Regarding the figures for overseas subsidiaries by region, a fall in the share of companies predicting higher employment was recorded in all but the other regions category.
