Quarterly Survey of Overseas Subsidiaries
Domestic and Overseas Employment
- [ RETURN ]
The amount of regular employees employed in the domestic parent companies was 2,492,000, a fall of 1.8% from the same period in the previous year, and a drop for the fifth consecutive period. When viewed by industry, all industries experienced a fall except for the stone and clay.
The number of employees in overseas subsidiaries was 1,341,000, a fall of 1.8%, after a fall in the period from July to September (down 0.3% from the same period in the previous year). When viewed by region, all regions experienced a fall except for North America. The fall in NIES3 was particularly noticeable.
The forecast for January to June 1999, when viewed in comparison to the DI of the previous period, is 5.9 points (from -40.8 to -34.9) in the case of domestic parent companies, with the percentage forecast decrease falling in nine industries. This is thought to be due to the increase in recruitment happening as a result of new recruits joining in April. In the case of overseas subsidiaries, the percentage decrease seen in NIES3 and some other regions decreased, although for the region as a whole the percentage decrease fell by 1.7 points (from -4.0 to -2.3) compared to the previous period.
