Selection of 16 New Projects to support the development of AI Models under the GENIAC Computing Resource Provision Support Project (Cycle 4)
June 4, 2026
Joint news release with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization
Under the GENIAC project to strengthen the development capabilities of generative AI and promote its social implementation, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will provide support to the 16 projects selected this time for the computing resources necessary for the development of AI models (Cycle 4).
1. Background
Generative AI is considered to be a technological innovation comparable to the Internet. This innovative technology is expected to contribute to solving social problems, including labor shortages. As the utilization of generative AI is being considered in all fields and development competition is intensifying internationally, it is important for Japan to secure and strengthen its development capabilities for generative AI while promoting its social implementation.
2. Overview of GENIAC
In order to swiftly establish domestic development capabilities for generative AI and to promote its social implementation, METI and NEDO have been implementing the GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) project since February 2024, including providing computing resources required for foundation model development and hosting a related community.
Past implementation results are as follows. The current phase is Cycle 4, with 16 projects selected.
Cycle 1 (Development period: February 2024–August)
Cycle 2 (Development period: October 2024–April 2025)
Cycle 3 (Development period: August 2025 – March 2026)
Providing support in securing computational resources
Securing computational resources is a major issue for companies to develop foundation models. To overcome this, METI will take advantage of the Research and Development Project of the Enhanced Infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems that NEDO has been advancing and support companies in securing computational resources and providing subsidies for the costs incurred in the use of these resources.
For details on each selected project after the public call for proposals, please refer to the related links in “3. Selected Themes” below.
3. Selected Themes
NEDO conducted the following public call for proposals and announced the selected projects. For details of the selected themes and the implementation organizations, please refer to the following web page.
