  • Total and local sales
  • Total sales were ¥789.8 billion, a decrease in 11 industries such as electrical machinery. This was a decrease of 13.1% from the same period in the previous year, a fall for the fifth consecutive period.
    The total of local sales was ¥254.6 billion, a decrease in 8 industries such as transportation machinery. This was a decrease of 26.5% from the same period in the previous year, also a fall for the fifth consecutive period, although the percentage drop was lower than previous periods.
    The sales forecast for January to June 1999 when compared to the previous DI period, is 3.2 points (from 1.2 to 4.4) and 2.9 points (from -2.2 to 0.7) in the case of local sales. The percentage of local subsidiaries predicting a rise in both areas is increasing.

  • Employment conditions
  • The number of employees is 403,000 (a decrease of 2.2% from the same period in the previous year), a fall for the third consecutive period. Compared to the increasing rate of decrease seen each period, the overall rate of decrease is getting lower.
    The forecast for January to June, 1999 was 5.3 points (from -11.2 to -5.9) compared to the last DI period. Even compared to other regions, the percentage of local subsidiaries forecasting an increase grew.

  • Reverse imports
  • Japan-bound exports, known as reverse imports, were ¥219.7 billion, a fall of 4.9% from the same period in the previous year, with six industries, such as electrical machinery, showing a drop. When compared to other regions, it had the lowest rate of decrease.
    The forecast for January to June, 1999 was 4.2 points (from -.2% to -1.0) compared to the last DI period with the percentage of local subsidiaries forecasting a decrease falling.

    *When looking at the progress since the period from October to December 1996, before the Asian currency crisis, in contrast to the dramatic drop in total sales and local sales, the drop in total Japan-bound imports and number of employees has been slight.
