Quarterly Survey of Overseas Subsidiaries

Status of Overseas Subsidiaries by region

Total sales were \8, 519.1 billion, a fall of 5.7% from the same period last year. When viewing the situation by region, everywhere except Europe saw a decrease. The drop in NIES3, due to the influence of electrical machinery, was particularly noticeable.

Exports to Japan, known as reverse imports, were \537 billion (19.8% down on the same period in the previous year), a decrease for the forth consecutive period. This large drop of 19.8% was mainly centered around NIES3, China and other areas of Asia.

Total sales for local subsidiaries was \5,193.4 billion, a fall of 2.4% from the same period in the previous year.

The number of employees decreased by 1.8% to 1,341,000 after falling in the period between July and September (a drop of 0.3% from the same period in the previous year). Viewed by region, every region except North America showed a decrease. The fall was particularly noticeable in NIE3.

The sales forecast for January to June 1999 when compared to the previous DI period, shows an increase in the number of local subsidiaries forecasting an increase in all regions. The total for all regions is 5.0 points (from 12.1 to 17.1). The total number of employees is forecast to improve by 1.7 points (from -4.0 to -2.3).
