  • Total and local sales
  • Total sales fell for the fourth consecutive period to ¥625.9 billion (a decrease of 28.5% from the same period in the previous year), with ten industries, such as electrical machinery, showing a decrease. The amount of the decrease has increased period by period.
    Local sales fell dramatically for the fifth consecutive period to ¥283.8 billion (a drop of 25.0% from the same period last year) with ten industries, such as electrical machinery, showing a decrease. Local sales, therefore, showed the same tendency as total sales.
    It will be necessary to pay close attention to developments from now onward.
    The forecast for January to June 1999, when viewed in comparison to the DI of the previous period, shows an increase in total sales of 2.5 points (from -14.8 to -12.3) and local sales of 2.5 points (from -9.7 to -7.2), with the number of overseas subsidiaries forecasting an increase on the rise.

  • Employment conditions
  • The number of employees totaled 104,000, a large decrease of 13.7% from the same period in the previous year.
    The forecast for January to June 1999, when viewed in comparison to the DI of the previous period, was -1.5 points (from -18.1 to -19.6), with the number of overseas subsidiaries forecasting a decrease increasing for the third consecutive period.

  • Reverse imports
  • Exports to Japan, as known as reverse imports, were ¥100.1 billion, a fall of 35.8% from the same period in the previous year, with 8 industries, such as electrical machinery, showing a fall. This was a decrease for the fourth consecutive period, and showed the same trends as total sales.
    The forecast for January to June 1999, when viewed in comparison to the DI of the previous period, was 2.7 points (from -22.6 to -19.9), with the number of overseas subsidiaries forecasting a fall decreasing.
